It is quite apparent that none of the Indian national hockey players is gainfully employed (‘Behind the podium’,IE,January 12). Otherwise, they wouldn’t have allowed the situation to reach such a deadlock, with neither the players nor the sports authorities willing to take the first step towards some sort of rapprochement, till Suresh Kalmadi brokered a compromise. These have been sad days indeed for Indian hockey, for a country that was once the undisputed world champions in international hockey. Fans of the game hope that the compromise works to everybody’s benefit, especially hockey’s.

Note the contrast (‘HI threatens to pick new World Cup squad,’ IE,January 13). We’ve a super-rich Board of Control for Cricket in India showering money on super-rich cricketers, many of whom figure in the list of the country’s top tax payers. On the other hand,Hockey India was ordering hockey players to practise and participate in the World Cup,without quite paying them.

Although it’s good that a deal appears to have been reached, considering the irregularities in autonomous sports bodies like the BCCI and Hockey India, the Union sports ministry should lay down rules for these and make them accountable under RTI.

Hockey is the only sport which kept bringing us at least one Olympic Gold for years. Even now,our players win tournaments. Therefore, the players’ demands need to be looked into sympathetically and sorted out amicably.

This refers to ‘India,Bangla agree to go all out against terror’ (IE,January 13). Sheikh Hasina’s overwhelming victory and her taking over as PM has favourable security implications for India. India can afford to relax its vigil on the eastern border as the ULFA is curbed and others cannot freely mount terror attacks on India from Bangladesh. However, this does not silence the extremists, who may lie low and wait for an opportunity to do damage. It’s good that the Indian government has signed a number of agreements, besides offering Dhaka a big credit line which raises the level of cooperation. Concurrently,it is necessary that both countries enter into close defence cooperation.

This refers to ‘HC rejects SC plea: CJI too under RTI’ (IE,January 13). The judiciary, and above all the Supreme Court, must understand that the executive, legislature, judiciary and the press constitute important pillars of the democratic system. Transparency in the judiciary will leave a rich legacy to posterity. Moreover, the judiciary should not forget that current systems and practices will be recorded for future reference.
