Earth shattering

The story of Nimlamu Sherpa was extremely touching (‘I saw husband, family plunge into Teesta, vanish in a flash’,IE,September 21). Like Nimlamu, there are scores of others who lost their near and dear ones. It was heartening to see that the government lost no time in despatching the National Disaster Response Force for relief and rescue work in the quake-hit region. We need to make our buildings quake-proof as this will help reduce the loss of life and property to a great extent.

Law of the land

The Supreme Court’s direction to Raju Ramchandran to be the amicus curiae to defend Ajmal Kasab has underlined the fact that due processes have to be followed (‘Due process: SC asks lawyer to defend Kasab’,IE,September 21). While some talk about the inordinate delay in convicting him,it is important that we uphold rule of the law. The extent of his alleged crime notwithstanding,India will come out of this with its head held high for having given Kasab the full benefit of the law during the trial.

Caste in the mould

THIS refers to ‘Quote unquote’ (IE,September 21). It is not surprising that UP Chief Minister Mayawati wants to bring Jats in the OBC list. There is an election in the state next year and she does not want to give an inch to the opposition, specially the RLD,in western UP. She is preparing the ground for the 2012 battle. Who knows, with the Congress and the BJP in the doldrums, she will have to counter only the SP and could emerge victorious. Sadly,UP would remain a state where caste politics still decides the outcome of an election.

Poor show

TEAM INDIA failed in every department during the England tour. It is time to analyse what happened and what can be done to improve our cricket. Our team was not only battered and bruised but it also lacked fighting spirit and that was the root cause of our poor show. The 7-4 combination weakened our bowling. We should have a regular fifth bowler. We must also learn to use powerplays properly. We chose the wrong moment for powerplays and paid heavily for that. We should think seriously about fixing these problem areas.

Fast track

IN this season of fasts,my friend was asked by his son as to why an indefinite fast was not treated as an attempt at suicide by the law (‘Asaram kids’ fathers on fast’,IE,September 21). He replied that it should be,since such practices are nothing but acts of coercion that lack the moral force of Gandhiji’s fasts. Now I too think indefinite fasts should be brought under the ambit of criminal law.
