Double trouble

This refers to the editorial ‘This is Poriborton?’ (IE,November 9). Old habits die hard. Perhaps Mamata Banerjee still subconsciously considers herself the opposition leader. In opposition, she was a “stormtrooper”. After coming to power, she seems to have become a paratrooper, landing where she isn’t supposed to. As Bengal’s chief minister and home minister, she’s taking the law into her own hands. Can she can expect the layperson to conduct himself/ herself properly? Poriborton comes through using power for a good cause and not for misusing it.

The popular belief about Mamata Banerjee’s populism is fast changing. Instead of earning her brownie points, her gimmicks, like storming police stations, not inviting eminent filmmakers and actors and the former chief minister who initiated the film festival, raise doubts on her credentials as a responsible CM.

Media watch

THIS refers to ‘We shalt not… TV editors reflect on how to cover Baby B’ (IE,November 8). The criticism of the media by Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju is not totally misplaced. The media need to introspect and discover their limits and responsibilities. The live content on 24×7 TV channels has no scope for scrutiny and editing and there is little sense of timing, priority, proportion and objectivity in reporting and debating issues. The Broadcast Editors Association should rather issue a general advisory in the matter.

Kalam’s hardselling

FORMER president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,by giving a blanket clearance to the Koodankulam nuclear power plant, has done a grave disservice to the inhabitants of that area and to the country (‘Dr Kalam’s dose’,IE,November 8). His statement was completely unwarranted since an earthquake is not the only risk Koodankulam faces. The question is whether nuclear energy is an option for India with its high population density. He has further compounded the problem by bringing the Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) project into the debate, thereby initiating talk of infrastructure and tertiary facilities in the Koodankulam area. Development of rural areas has to take place anyway, not because of a nuclear power plant.

THE editorial ‘Spot checks’ (IE,November 3),on the conviction of Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt,Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif rightly says that while the jury is still out on whether this is a healthy development that will deter others,it’s also a reminder of the state of Pakistan’s cricket. Cricketers have been convicted in court for the first time. The ICC should establish a mechanism to deter malpractices so that cricket doesn’t take become an organised crime.
