Don’t foot this bill

Apropos ‘Kill her bill’ (IE,May 1),the powers that be try to muzzle the press when they cannot answer questions about their failure to meet people’s expectations. Congress MP Meenakshi Natarajan’s proposed bill should be seen in this light. Natarajan is an important MP and the Congress cannot abdicate responsibility by saying it is a private member’s bill.

THE editorial ‘Kill her Bill’ was commendable. The people of this country will fully support the media’s efforts to oppose such a draconian bill. However, the fourth estate should also ponder over the matter and devise self-control measures to avert any attempt by an outside agency to impose restraints in the name of national security. One important measure may be to segregate opinion from information. This is needed in school textbooks as well, especially the history books.

Italian job

THIS refers to ‘SC slams Rs 2-cr settlement: “payment to buy silence” ‘ (IE,May 1). The Italian government’s act of negotiating directly with the families of the fishermen allegedly killed by the Italian marines is a gross violation of our legal system. India is not a banana republic where blood money is the norm.

Presidential suit

LOK Sabha Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj was right to say that the BJP would not entertain any Congress candidate, including Pranab Mukherjee, for the president’s post. Though Mukherjee, chief troubleshooter for the government and a senior minister, remains the best bet among all the candidates, the BJP will not accept him for political reasons. The big question is: should the Congress nominate him as presidential candidate when he is one of the few efficient ministers left in the UPA government?

THE controversy over Sachin Tendulkar’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha has been stretched unnecessarily. Are the current members of the Upper House model parliamentarians? If not,why can’t we tolerate Tendulkar as MP? The publice seems to be giving him a hard time just because of his celebrity status. The nomination was meant to honour the batsman and not to crucify him.

Few reservations

MAYAWATI’S votebank manipulations have thankfully come to naught. General category employees in Uttar Pradesh were afforded relief by the recent Supreme Court order, which struck down her demands for more reservation. Instead of uniting the society, such reservation politics creates resentment among various sections of society.
