Opinion Disappearing act
With the opposition targeting the PM on the missing coal files, the Congress has asserted that files are not his direct responsibility.
* With the opposition targeting the PM on the missing coal files, the Congress has asserted that files are not his direct responsibility (BJP stokes coal fire, want PM to depose before CBI,IE,September 5). This is not a valid argument. The PM cannot escape accountability for the misdeeds of people and ministries under his watch. The department or individual responsible for the missing coal files should be identified. To ensure that such lapses do not occur in future, all important files should be digitised. Except for files concerning sensitive matters such as defence, all documents should be made publicly available online.

Lesson to learn
* Apropos the editorial Clash and concert (IE,September 6),the decision of the opponents of Zubin Mehtas Ehsas-e-Kashmir concert to hold a parallel protest concert called Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir may have a larger political purpose behind it,but is a very welcome step. Through this, they hope to send out a clear message. A message that will be communicated far more effectively this way than through bandhs and bans. This is a lesson that the high-handed VHP,Shiv Sena and MNS must learn. In order to serve their political interests, these self-styled custodians of Indian culture routinely disrupt film shows, music programmes and art exhibitions alleged to be against the Indian ethos.

Wresting control
* This refers to Case not closed by M.R. Madhavan (IE,September 5). Id like to congratulate the writer for updating the public about the amendment of such a crucial article of our Constitution. Rather than setting their own house in order by decriminalising politics and making themselves more accountable, our legislators,by proposing to amend the Constitution, are trying to wrest control of an important and respected arm of the state the judiciary. The present system of selecting judges has been efficacious. The proposed amendments, which effectively empower Parliament to change the composition of the Judicial Accountability Committee through a simple majority at a later date, will surely make the process of appointing judges less fool proof. On the one hand giving the CBI greater autonomy has been the flavour of the season. On the other hand, the executive seems keen to put the judiciary in a cage.

Welcome Rajan
* The markets have responded favourably to Raghuram Rajan taking over as governor of the RBI (Rajan pep talk fuels bank rally, rupee up 1.6% to close at 66.01,IE,September 6). Rajan has a really challenging job ahead,to correct the economic mismanagement that has taken place so far at the hands of those who have taken major economic decisions keeping politics in mind. The governor needs to focus his attention and energy on mitigating the risk of a banking crisis, which might be caused by the colossal exposure of commercial banks to non performing assets.
