Opinion Didi’s road ahead

A big responsibility will be on her shoulder

Didi’s road ahead

This refers to ‘Bengal stands up to ask for more’ (IE,May 11). Mamata Banerjee seems a few steps away from the chief minister’s office. A big responsibility will be on her shoulder. She is a one-woman army and has a huge following, but she doesn’t have a very good track record in administration. She needs to understand that it is easy to sit in the opposition and criticise. She would do well to start on a clean slate without any vengeance towards the Left and have a development-based agenda. If she can bring West Bengal back to the path of industrialisation and generate employment, she would have won the battle.

Money for nothing

I endorse Jean Dreze’s view in ‘The cash mantra’

(IE,May 11). The best point he makes is: “food is shared equitably within the family, while cash can easily be cornered by selfish individuals”. Any amount,if it reaches a family through the proposed CCT,may be misused. With our rigid budgetary exercises, will CCT enjoy any flexibility in that such moneys will be adjusted for inflation? For most BPL families, any amount coming from the government is big,and they forget that money is to be spent on food. With all it drawbacks, the PDS is still preferable.

Ghaziabad

Seeing red

CHINA’S support for Pakistan after the Abbottabad raid was expected (‘Post Osama,China backs friend Pak,takes swipe at India’,IE,May 11). The world is now aware of Pakistan being a haven for terrorists. Pakistan has been fooled into “gifting” a portion of Kashmir to China. Pro-democracy movements are gaining momentum in China, much to its chagrin. India has to be vigilant against both these scheming neighbours.

THIS refers to ‘Eye on 2012’ (IE,May 10). The land acquisition process for the proposed Yamuna Expressway has gone from bad to worse. While no one can oppose the need for development, one wonders where this unending quest for rapid urbanisation will take us. Are huge buildings a replacement for our agricultural land,so vital to our survival? Have we done our math? Sadly, our politicians are evading the real issues and preparing the ground for the 2012 UP assembly elections.

Dada’s knock

SOURAV GANGULY is not finished yet. His brilliant comeback in the IPL is another feather in his cap. Ignored in the IPL-4 auction,Dada has had the last laugh. He is one of the best captains our country has ever had and the BCCI should use his services as a consultant for the national side.
