Court unquote

* A perusal of the Supreme Court’s orders on Salwa Judum and black money left one dismayed because these strayed from the strict constitutional parameters traditionally followed by India’s highest judiciary and ended up deriding the ideology of “economic neo-liberalism”. In his column (‘The Supreme Quote’,IE,July 9),Shekhar Gupta has echoed the feeling of distress and disenchantment of many Indians on the SC bench’s departure from its record of landmark pronouncements.

* As the editorial ‘Off the track’ (IE,July 11) points out,Indian Railways need to be headed by an energetic minister who can rise above parochial interests. The time has also come to review the organisational structure of the ministry, redefine the functions of the Railway Board in terms of accountability and lay down systems that would enable the railways to run as a commercial entity focusing on customer service, safety and revenue. Its waywardness can be checked by withdrawing its right to present a separate budget, which has been marked by populist programmes rather than prudent vision.

Spot of trouble

* This refers to the editorial ‘More than medals’ (IE,July 9). Doping has sullied the image of Indian sports. Firing the coaches is at best a face-saving exercise. The malaise runs deep. There must be a wider probe if the government is serious about tackling the issue.

Good penny

* This is apropos the editorial ‘Micro-mismatch’ (IE,July 8). It presents a case for consumer protection and at the same time calls for encouraging innovation in this fledgling sector. The Microfinance Institution (Development and Regulation) Bill should give MFIs ample opportunity to develop and at the same time place robust consumer protection measures. Since there is little possibility of systemic risk as has been rightly pointed out,the bill must not go for tighter regulations.

Lokpal decoded

* The conversation with CIC Satyanand Mishra (‘Walk the Talk’,IE,July 5) was an eye-opener on the Lokpal bill. He talked about the practical problems of finding a Lokpal of unimpeachable integrity, one who has shown fierce independence and has no record of a complaint against him. As the CIC rightly said, one will have to paratroop Yudhishtirs for this post.

West out of Bengal

* Mamata Banerjee’s government has decided to change the name of West Bengal because “West” brings it down in the list of states alphabetically. When Punjab was bifurcated,we didn’t call our Indian Punjab “East Punjab”,but simply “Punjab”. Banerjee should name our Indian Bengal as “Bengal” only.
