• This refers to Sugar free. Despite building pressure from the people and the opposition the government has found it difficult to mitigate the effects of inflation. It seems absurd that on the one hand people have been enduring a price hike, but on the other the Union government is helpless in combating it. Further, the agriculture ministers statement on sugar prices depicts frustration and apathy. The only thing on display is austerity,to protect the government from public ire. When it comes to inflation, the UPA could learn from its predecessors.

On foundations
• Demands for the creation of new states have been a chronic feature of the Indian polity since the inception of the republic. Such agitations typically base themselves on claims of neglect or discrimination from the Union or state governments. But the question is: are smaller states better governed than bigger ones? In our experience, both large and small states continue to be badly governed until there is an effective devolution of funds, functions and functionaries to local authorities. Governance is not merely a question of how to deal with foreign or domestic threats it should address the quality of living and the provision of basic services. It seems as though in our race towards accelerated growth we have concentrated simply on economic reforms much to the total neglect of delivering public goods and services.

For Haiti
• This refers to Haiti devastated. Even though Haiti is in close proximity to the US,it remains one of the poorest countries of the world. One should take note of the fertility rates as they are an indicator of development: Haiti has one of the highest. Whats more, such rates are not complemented by adequate education. The tragedy that has shaken Haiti requires a non-partisan moment from all,not just the US. This earthquake should usher in more research aimed at predicting earthquakes and mitigating their impact.

• This refers to Hockey strike opens some purse strings. It is welcome that sports authorities have shown interest in hockey. Indian hockey is on the edge and quick steps need to be taken to revitalise it. Hockey is our national sport and has brought us many laurels. Therefore,Indian hockey needs to be liberated from unelected power brokers. The takeover of the hockey administration after India failed to qualify for the 2008 Olympics is yet to produce sound benefits but our players are not to blame.
The unresponsiveness and lack of appreciation and support too share the blame.
