Ban the bandh

This refers to ‘6 injured as JD(U),BJP supporters clash’ (IE,June 19). The disruptive and violent Bihar bandh called by the BJP,after the break-up of its alliance with the JD(U),reflects the ugliness in current Indian politics. The conduct of both parties, just a few days after their split, was unfortunate; it leaves one wondering about their 17-year-long alliance. Such bandhs are called too frequently by political parties. The intimidation and violence that their party workers resort to paralyses normal life for the rest of us. The question of voluntary participation in the bandh doesn’t even arise. Common people are fed up with these bandhs; they are the ones who suffer the most due to them. Bandhs and rail and road blockades need to be outlawed by Parliament.

This refers to ‘Rahul is “natural leader” of UPA3: Manmohan Singh’ (IE,June 18). Though Rahul Gandhi has been a parliamentarian since 2004,his performance as a member of the Lok Sabha has been indifferent and does not warrant elevating him to a higher post. His apathy towards politics is evident from his attendance in Parliament, and the lack of any significant participation in debates over the last eight years. Manmohan Singh,as a sensible veteran, should concentrate more on giving Gandhi some political training, and appraise him of governance issues,so that one day he might be able to take the reins from Singh.

Blame game

This refers to ‘Locked House’ by Inder Malhotra (IE,June 18). The article was unconvincing as it blamed both the Congress and the BJP for the non-functioning of Parliament. The assertion that the “rot began during Indira Gandhi’s watch for more reasons than one” needs more explanation. The BJP is undoubtedly responsible for not allowing Parliament to function. They protest disruptively on all manner of dubious and unjustified grounds, and demand the PM’s resignation at the drop of a hat.

Give to the rich

This refers to ‘Abhishek Singhvi moves IT settlement commission over undeclared income’ (IE,June 18). The contrasts between the governments and societies of affluent Western countries and those of India are appalling. The rich in countries like the US donate generously to social causes, and their governments are effective in taxing them. Tax evasion and filing incorrect tax returns are not taken lightly. In India, the rich prefer to appeal for their tax liability to be reduced, and the customs duties due to be paid by them on imported luxury vehicles to be waived. They even conceal their true income with impunity. They essentially make a mockery of our democracy.
