Attrition mode

* Apropos ‘Amend Gen’s birth date,Govt reminds Army’ (IE,January 30),the ministry of defence has ordered that the army chief’s date of birth be considered 1950,and that the record of 1951 held by the adjutant general is “not valid”. Won’t this boomerang on the government since General Singh’s birth certificate issued by the military hospital in Pune and his high school certificate reportedly show 1951 as the year of birth? How could these be “changed” unless these are tampered with or fabricated? Copies of these certificates must be part of the supporting evidence of General Singh’s petition in the Supreme Court. At this stage, the ministry should have desisted from issuing an order for changing the official record.

* Apropos ‘Good one, mates’ (IE,January 31),the new pace of tennis matches is far more engrossing than the slam-dunk era of the 1990s. Players winning points by the dint of lightning-fast aces hardly made for absorbing viewing. This is the age of marathon tennis matches, what with Wimbledon modifying its grass surface to acquire a more predictable bounce and players focusing on stamina, endurance, baseline play, angled shots, crosscourt coverage and even attitude-conditioning. However, the choc-a-bloc calendar means players need to be selective in their participation to avoid the risk of burnout or injury. The record number of withdrawals in the 2010 US Open was a shocking testimony to player fatigue. The tennis fan won’t mind because longer matches tend to be evenly matched, heightening the spectacle.

And there were two

* Before blaming the Indian cricket team’s debacle on Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman, one should remember the times they pulled India out of difficult situations. The Australia series was disappointing but it is just a matter of one tour. Apart from Dravid and Laxman, there were nine players. They are also equally responsible. Team India does not lack talent. They were low on morale and confidence. Young bowlers like Vinay Kumar and Umesh Yadav are still inexperienced in international matches. The person to be blamed is the coach Duncan Fletcher whose job is to mentally prepare the team to face opponents.

Who is right?

* Thank you for carrying Shahid Siddiqui’s ‘Write,Wrong’ (IE,January 28 ).Over the decades, liberal Muslims have been torn between the right to freedom of expression and the kind of language used in books like The Satanic Verses. Most Muslims identify with the Prophet in a deeply personal manner. In a literal sense, the Prophet’s life has controlled the lives of Muslims through the centuries. It is revolting then that Rushdie’s book has prostitutes having names as those of the Prophet’s wives.
