Opinion Another rally

The massive rally of sugarcane farmers in New Delhi appears to have assumed political overtones (Sugarcane protests stall House, force Govt relook,IE,November 20). This reminds me of a similar event that took place in December 1978 in the capital. It was the occasion of a gigantic farmers rally organised under the tutelage of the then Union home minister,Charan Singh. Though ostensibly arranged to voice the grievances of the farmers community, the political undercurrent was clearly discernible. Within six months of this event,in July 1979 to be precise,Charan Singh overthrew Morarji Desai as prime minister, only to submit his resignation without facing the Lok Sabha even for a single day.

Man of the match
I fully endorse Sachin Tendulkars triumphant statement that Mumbai is a part of India and I play for India. Mumbai belongs to all (Sachin friend Raj,furious nation keep MNS quiet,IE,November 18). He symbolises the desire of all those who are proud to be Indians first. His words have come as a breath of fresh air. Icons like him can unite a country which is diverse in culture, language and religion. Sachin needs to be congratulated for his bold posture against linguistic extremism. Stirring people against the nation is a criminal act and cannot be treated mildly.

Firm rebuttal
It is a good sign that India has categorically rejected any third party intervention in Indo-Pak relations as suggested in the US-China statement. India is sending out a message that when it comes to core issues touching on its principled stand,it admits of no compromises.

Remember Bush?
This has a reference to Selig Harrisons article From Kabul to Kashmir (IE,November 20). George W. Bush is the only US president in recent times to have recognised that friendship with India would be more beneficial to Americas interests than that of Pakistan and he tried to set the Indo-US relationship on an even keel.

Persian overture
This refers to the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Monouchehr Mottaki which has again brought Indo-Iranian relations into focus. Further significant moves can clear the way for the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline issue and other trade agreements. This can also strengthen Indias stake in securing Central Asian transit routes from terrorist activity.

Still waiting
This is with regard to the first anniversary of the Mumbai attack. It is most unfortunate that the kith and kin of people who lost their lives are still yearning for justice. However, the heroes who put their lives at risk executing the rescue operation need more than praise in recognition of their feat. Will the Indian government and judiciary live up to expectations?
