•This refers to the terrorist attack on a police academy near Lahore. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik sees a similarity with the Mumbai attack in November 2008,but former Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub said that it is similar to the one on the Sri Lankan team earlier in March. Within two major attacks on Lahore in a month,Pakistan should realise that it’s the continuous campaign against India conducted by their ISI,military and their political parties which must be addressed. But still,at this critical hour India must stand by Pakistan and give them the support they need.

objects of creating disaffection in Jammu and Kashmir and possibly to gain a foothold in Afghanistan have now turned the guns on them. It will take a Herculean effort to weed out these extremist elements.

Word watching

•The Election Commission should have ticked Varun Gandhi off but it went overboard recommending to the BJP his debarment from contesting the elections. His mother Maneka Gandhi also went overboard, adding new fuel to the raging fire. When shall we learn that India is a secular democratic country and we all have a stake in keeping it that way — and that hate politics of one or the other kind will destroy its delicate fabric,as has happened to our immediate neighbour? Restraint should be the watchword. Hate politics should be avoided at all costs. Those practising it should be shunned. I’m sure Indian voters are smart enough to give the practitioners of hate politics short shrift.

•Varun Gandhi’s speech is without doubt a political gimmick. With elections round the corner, various political parties are trying every trick in their bag to garner votes.

In order to conduct unbiased and fair elections,it is the duty of the Election Commissioner to look into this affair. Such unabashedly cynical candidates, who are trying to divide India on the basis of Hindutva, should be rejected outright.

Without Dutt

•The Supreme Court has done well by barring Sanjay Dutt from contesting elections. The sad part, however,is that decisions which political parties should have taken themselves are being pushed to the courts. Why cannot political parties cleanse themselves of criminals? It indeed is a shameful situation.

When in London

•India must argue for greater inclusiveness in the international financial system (‘Sharp focus on the sideline’,IE,March 30). The establishment of a new international financial system in this time of economic crisis should be clearly focused on.
