The process of normalisation of relations between India and China reached its final milestone with the presentation of credentials by the new Chinese ambassador Chen Chao-yuan to President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. The occasion was celebrated with the two governments making it abundantly clear that they were looking forward to developing “friendly relations of mutual respect with each other”.

Pak migrants drown

Illegal immigrants were ordered by two ship captains to jump into the sea and at least 11 of them drowned during an attempt to land about 1,400 Pakistanis in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE). Several hundered of the migrants, who survived drowning or being arrested, are being hunted by police in the coastal hills overlooking a lonely beach in the Emirate of Fujairah.

Barauni shut

The Barauni oil refinery was shut down as a precautionary measure and three units of the Barauni power station were closed due to heavy water-logging. Engineers and district authorities continued their battle to save the Barauni industrial complex from the fury of the Ganga. Water entered the Begusarai and Barauni districts after heavy rain and a breach in the abandoned Gupta-Lakhimina Bund. IAF helicopters
and army boats continued their relief operations in south Bihar. Two helicopters have also been deployed in north Bihar for relief operations.

India in UNSC

India’s election to the Security Council is a certainty in tomorrow’s UN General Assembly. India is expected to take its seat on the council for a two-year term, starting January 1. It will replace Japan. India was assured of this seat last year itself. The Asian Group of the UN met several weeks ago to formally endorse India’s candidature.
