A man who allegedly made three attempts to assassinate the former Punjab chief minister Darbara Singh, and shot dead a Nirankari medical practitioner near Ludhiana has been arrested by the police along with one of his accomplices.

The accused, Sarwan Singh, 24, has confessed to his association with Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Congress’ new slogans

The 17th session of the Congress (I) is likely to give some new slogans to bring the party closer to the people in the pre-election year. Senior party leaders are struggling with the resolutions on political, international and economic affairs that will be placed before the session for approval. However, party sources indicated that new slogans on the pattern of “garibi hatao” or the 20-point programme would be announced by Mrs Indira Gandhi.

Express In Nicaragua

The present revolutionary government in Nicaragua came to power in 1979 after overthrowing pro-American dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle. Today, Nicaragua is facing the threat of invasion by its neighbours or the US.

Many Delhi panchayat results were announced at the Tis Hazari courts amidst confusion and allegations of favouritism, wrong counting and misuse of official machinery by Congress (I) candidates. More than 20 candidates for the posts of pradhans have lodged complaints with officials. In two cases, stay orders were obtained from the Delhi High Court.
