The arrogance and cynicism of the Samajwadi Party is shocking.

* The arrogance and cynicism of the Samajwadi Party is shocking. To say that the people still living in the relief camps near Muzaffarnagar are BJP and Congress supporters who are out to discredit the UP government for political mileage is obnoxious. Can anyone believe that people will stay in makeshift camps in this biting cold in sub-human conditions and allow their children to die, just to score some political brownie points? It is time Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son,Akhilesh, woke up and saw the ground reality. They need to start acting rationally. The riot victims are not bothered about political one upmanship. The UP government needs to help them stand on their feet with dignity.

Denying history

* This refers to ‘Modi: Relief and a headache’ (IE,December 27). The photograph of Zakia Jafri that accompanied the news report, and was taken after an Ahmedabad court declared its verdict accepting the closure report submitted by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team,is worth a thousand words. The vulgar celebrations by Narendra Modi’s supporters were unfortunate. It would have helped if Modi had tweeted instead that he was deeply sorry for what had happened and feels Jafri’s pain, even though he was not directly involved in the tragedy. After all,can the Gulberg Society massacre itself be denied?

* Apropos of ‘Hurts federalism,witch-hunt by Congress against Modi, says BJP’ (IE,December 27),with the 2014 general election just a few months away, the Centre’s decision to set up a commission of inquiry on the Gujarat police’s alleged physical and electronic surveillance of a young woman is justifiably being seen as a conspiracy against Narendra Modi. The fact that the commission has been directed to submit its report in three months further adds to the impression of a witch-hunt. Unable to fight Modi politically and scared of his popularity, the Congress is misusing its government at the Centre to try to implicate the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. An Ahmedabad court’s clean chit to Modi for the 2002 Gulberg Society case has shattered the hopes of the PM candidate’s adversaries.

* This refers to ‘Devyani had full diplomatic immunity when she was arrested’ (IE,December 27). The plot thickens. Shame on the US authorities for arresting Devyani Khobragade even though she had diplomatic immunity because she was accredited as an advisor to India’s permanent mission to the UN till December 31,2013. It is unfortunate that such a humiliating episode took place in the US. If Khobragade was doing something that violated US law,it should have politely and discreetly been brought to her notice or conveyed to the government of India. Now that the US is clearly in the wrong,it should tender an apology as soon as possible. Such an ugly confrontation must not be allowed to recur in future.
