* This refers to Kejriwal govt opens freebie floodgates: 667 litres daily (IE,December 31). If you know even a little bit of economics, you will appreciate that if a politician is giving you free water, you need to find out what the source of the funds for this is. He is not going to give you a freebie financed through party funds. Indirectly, the politician is going to make you pay. When the economy starts to go under because of a huge government deficit, the politician will be left with no choice other than to increase taxes or go to the Centre with a begging bowl. I,for one,do not need this charity. The cost of water is quite meagre to begin with. And the real aam aadmi uses much less water than what is being doled out at present. Does Arvind Kejriwal really need to make such a big dent in the exchequer and encourage people to consume water profligately? Where is all this free water going to come from?

* Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken a very farsighted decision to provide 20 kl of free water to each household per month. Not only would this give relief to the needy,it would also ensure that people became conscious of the need to save water. The prospect of paying Rs 870 for consuming even a drop of water above this free amount will be an effective deterrent against wastage. The cost of the programme approximately Rs 160 crore is insignificant in view of the fact that people consuming above the free limit will effectively be cross-subsidising the poor and will pay much more. The water we will save in the process is also worth the cost.

Fitting farewell
* This refers to King Kallis (IE,December 31). Jacques Kallis was given a fitting farewell by cricket lovers after he played his last Test match against India at Kingsmead,Durban. He has proved his worth by scoring a brilliant century, which enabled South Africa to pile up a big total and take a sizeable lead. Kallis not only exhibited his fine batting skills but also achieved the status of the third-highest run scorer in the history of Test cricket.

Safety first
* A coach of the Bangalore-Nanded Express was engulfed in flames near Anantapur and claimed 26 lives. The material used in the coach was not fire-retardant. The railways urgently needs to focus on safety issues.
