IT WILL BE a long time before the dazed and frightened city of Bhopal returns to normal. Hundreds are yet to return to their homes, a majority of shops in the old city remain closed and at offices, attendance is thin. The system could have collapsed if not for the people who have come out to help the less fortunate.

MP’s liability

THE MADHYA PRADESH government can be sued for damages in the US for the Bhopal tragedy if there is any problem with immunity, according to US attorney Melvin Belli. He said the principle to follow is the one laid down by England’s House of Lords in 1865, where the court said that if one stores something detrimental to the life and property of others, one should be liable for damages.

Iran hijacking ends

THE SIX-DAY hijacking of a Kuwaiti airliner ended dramatically on December 9 when Iranian security guards stormed the plane, seized four Arab hijackers and released nine hostages still aboard. Iran disguised four guards as a technician, a doctor, and two cleaners, who set off a smoke bomb. The operation came after a day of rising tension during which the hijackers demanded a replacement aircraft to take them out of Tehran.
