Satwant Singh, the alleged surviving assassin of Indira Gandhi, denied having shot at her on October 31 last year and said he was innocent and falsely implicated in the case. “I am a Sikh and any Sikh could be implicated in the assassination of Indira Gandhi in view of the political climate prevailing then, and in view of this, somebody in authority is taking advantage of the Hindu-Sikh rift,” he said in his statement before the special judge.

Clarification on PM’s statement

A spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs sought to put to rest what he called a “misunderstanding” over the Prime Minister’s statement in the Rajya Sabha on November 21 regarding India’s relations with China. The spokesman clarified that discussions on trade exchanges were already taking place between India and China. This issue was not raised because talks on the border- issue were not an appropriate forum for these discussions, the spokesman quoted the Minister for External Affairs as having said.

He implied that these were only “tentative” or provisional recommendations and would become final only after the representatives of the employers, the employees and the state labour ministers had sent their suggestions and comments.
