Tripura CM Manik Saha On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Tripura CM Manik Saha said the 1947 Partition inflicted wounds on generations in India as it happened per the wishes of “two people” against the majority.
At an event in Agartala, Saha stated that contrary to perception, not just Hindus but many Muslim, Sikh leaders, and other faiths opposed Partition.
“It would be wrong to think that Hindus alone opposed or didn’t want Partition. Many Muslim, Sikh leaders and people who believed in other religions didn’t want the Partition. Two people were responsible for the Partition of India,” he said.
However, he did not name the “two people” responsible.
The CM defended Mahatma Gandhi over Partition, saying Bapu, as he was fondly referred to, was against it.
“Many a time, we often say so many things about the father of the nation – Mahatma Gandhi. He was opposed to Partition. He even said if Partition had to happen, it would have to be over his dead body,” Saha said.
Saha lamented the uncounted horrors and haunting generational effects of Partition, disrupting India’s culture and heritage. He recounted the plight of lakhs who became refugees in 1947 and 1971.
“Lakhs of people had to take refuge in other regions due to Partition. When we look back at the time of Partition today, we realize how people suffered then. We must not forget history or their pain and anguish. It is with the aim of remembering the horrors of this Partition that Prime Minister Narendra Modi started Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,” he said.
The CM said the remembrance day, started by PM Modi, would create awareness and sensitize youth about the traumatic history. It must not be forgotten, he added.
Minister Tinku Roy said the day would benefit younger generations by highlighting Partition truths. Former Deputy CM Jishnu Devvarma termed it a scandalous human chapter, saying Tripura also suffered division.
