Apparently unhappy with the inadequate security provided to him, Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni went to the Birsa Munda airport in Ranchi without any ‘armed men’ to fly off to Chennai, claimed a former coach of the wicket-keeper batsman.

“Dhoni’s security is inadequate. His brother-in-law Gautam has approached the Jharkhand police on more than one occasion,” claimed Dhoni’s former coach Chanchal Bhattacharya after the cricketer left for Chennai early Thursday morning to participate in the team selection meeting for the Test series against England.

“Dhoni left for Chennai without any security for the team selection meeting,” said Bhattacharya.

Jharkhand Sports Minister Bandhu Tirkey, however, denied the claims, saying that there was any laxity in Dhoni’s security.

“I spoke to the police chief and learnt that there was no issue with Dhoni’s security,” he said.

“I appeal to you all not to exaggerate things and concentrate on coverage of National Games beginning February 15,” Tirkey added.

The Sports Minister has held media responsible for blowing up the issue regarding Dhoni seeking a license for a .9mm pistol.

Jharkhand Police spokesman S N Pradhan said that Dhoni had been given ‘Z’ security which was adequate.

Asked whether Dhoni had asked for enhancement of his security, Pradhan said, “Rather he is unhappy over too many policemen guarding him.”
