Yusuf takes West to huge win

Already assured of the title, West Zone signed-off their Deodhar Trophy campaign with an emphatic 192-run victory over South Zone in the concluding match of the tournament here today.

Already assured of the title, West Zone signed-off their Deodhar Trophy campaign with an emphatic 192-run victory over South Zone in the concluding match of the tournament here today.

Maintaining an all-win record, West Zone deservingly claimed the honours with 19 points and ended a lengthy drought, having won the title way back during the 1990-91 season.

Openers Yusuf Pathan 112 and left-handed Parthiv Patel 36 led the way for West Zone with a century stand in a mammoth total of 308 for nine, which South never looked like surpassing in a completely lopsided encounter.

Turning out for their final match without several frontline players, West still had enough quality to beat South, who caved in meekly during the run-chase and were dismissed for just 116 in 29 overs.

Central Zone, who finished with eight points, claimed the runners-up spot while East 6 points ended third.

Enroute to emerging as the tournament8217;s highest run -getter, Pathan8217;s blistering knock was the centrepiece of West8217;s batting display, which also had useful contributions from Cheteshwar Pujara 69 and Rajesh Pawar 26 n o.
