
NEW DELHI, AUG 28: By the time constable Ravinder had clocked his usual eight hours on the beat on Thursday, he lay on a hospital bed wrapped in bandages with a fractured knee and a broken shoulder. He had been thrown off a bridge by four men whom he had questioned in a routine checking operation at Paharganj.
Ravinder was walking his usual beat along with constable Sukhbir on the Paharganj bridge when he saw four youths walk towards them. It was well past 1.30 am and Ravinder, who was used to stepping up checking on his patrol after the midnight deadline, approached them for explanations.
Recovering quickly, Sukhbir sprang into action and swung his lathi furiously at them. 8220;It was a very brave act on the part of my partner, who despite being outnumbered four-to-one, hit back courageously and chased them as they began to flee,8221; added Ravinder. The police conducted raids the houses of the other accused but all of them had fled.
Sukhbir was joined by two policemen, Rajesh Shukla and Ali Haider, who were patrolling nearby. They managed to nab one of them near Shiela Cinema but the other three managed to escape.
Devinder alias Guddu, a resident of Karol Bagh, said he and three of his friends Anoop, Dilip and Deep had visited G B Road that night and were on their way back when they were stopped for questioning. Ravinder, who was admitted to LNJP hospital, is recuperating.
