As an economist, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should realise the adverse economic impact the country has been incurring by ignoring such a vast, productive and capable resource pool. This fiftysomething would take the energy, enthusiasm and education of the Now Generation any time over the well documented and easily available experience of his own generation.

Why don8217;t they appoint someone who is in his 40s for such a high post? Experience alone does not matter. 8226; I found some of Mohammad Wajihuddin8217;s comments about Anurag Kashyap8217;s movie about the 1993 bomb blasts, Black Friday, quite perplexing 8216;Mumbai 8217;93: truth untold8217;, IE, January 21. Wajihuddin8217;s charge is that the film 8220;mimics C-grade Bollywood masala movies8221; in its portrayal of Muslims. As evidence he quotes a bit of dialogue in the film in which a police officer tells a criminal: 8220;Tumhara khuda tumhare saath nahin tha,8221; and comments sardonically, 8220;One had never heard of good-hearted cops who quote Islamic virtues to misguided Muslim criminals.8221; Wajihuddin8217;s misrepresentation of how this scene is played is total. In the film the cop is not delivering a masala-movie style sermon to the criminal. Instead, exasperated by the criminal8217;s insistence that the bomb blasts had God8217;s sanction, he responds heatedly, pointing out to the criminal how he is now languishing in jail while Yakub Memon, the brain behind the operation, is a free man in Dubai.

Yes, indeed, the cause of our numbness or insensitivity to the sufferings of others is our self-centredness, selfishness and inability to think beyond our zone of comfort. Only when empathy, love, brotherhood and caring are awakened will we realise how far we have blindly traversed from what we should have been.
