Orphaned kids
As 33 children were adopted by 32 couples, thanks to the efforts of SOFOSH (Society of Friends of Sassoon Hospitals). Many of the couples already have natural kids and decided to adopt rather than have more of their own. A home for the kids and a wish of the couples fulfilled.

The girl-child
With the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) planning to launch the Central Government’s Balika Samruddhi Yojana. The project aims to help the girl-child born into families below the poverty line, change the attitude of the community towards the mother and improve the attendance of girls in schools.

Science education
With noted physicist Jayant Narlikar announcing a Science Park for kids and elders. The park, which will be inaugurated in December on the 10th anniversary of IUCAA, will go a long way in popularising science. It will house models explaining science and scientific phenomena.

The mega-water projectWith Additional Chief Secretary of Rural Development AND Water Supply V Ranganathan refusing to extend the deadline for the submission of tenders. Companies were originally scheduled to file their tenders by September 22, but the Pune Municipal Corporation had acceded to their request for extension. With this order, it is hoped that the much-delayed Rs 735 crore mega-water project finally sees the light of day.

Army aspirants
With the College of Military Engineering (CME), which completed 50 years in Pune, planning to start a direct-entry scheme to admit students after their Std. XII examinations. A budget of Rs. 10.06 crore has been submitted to the Central Government for the initial phase of the training.

The katraj-loni-kalbhor easterly bypassWith the PMC standing committee agreeing in principle to acquire land for the bypass. This will go a long way in easing the congestion on the city’s roads.

With the department all set to go online with the inauguration of a project to computerise the department. This will help maintain easily accessible data on registered vehicles, history of any violations they could be involved in and licences issued to people.
