DJ Arjun of Jalebee Cartel on winning Blue Frog8217;s war of the spin-doctors
You were obviously the crowd8217;s favourite last night. How did you see to that?
The most important thing in a gig is the music. If the people dance to your music then you know you8217;re doing a good job. That8217;s our philosophy at the Jalebee Cartel.
Have you ever been beaten?
Oh no, never.
Do you think you8217;ll ever be beaten?
Don8217;t know about that. I ended last night very well, but when I got there I didn8217;t know which way the crowd would go. DJ Pramz had all his friends in the crowd to support him. But then again, I wasn8217;t too worried. The important thing for me was that everyone had a good time.
Actually, it completely depends on the crowd and the ambience of the club. For instance, the Blue Frog has got this amazing vibe which makes me perform in a certain way. I play a few tracks to suss out the crowd8217;s mood and then I also try to give them a bit of an education by introducing some new music. If you play the same old stuff, then you lose the crowd. So you keep their interest alive by trying out new stuff on them.
How do you prepare for a gig?
I play very often and I keep myself updated about the new trends in music. I want to make sure that people get the best of international music and I want to see Indian music on par with the world.
What was you first gig?
It was way back in 1996 in Bangalore. It was for a school party and I was only 16 then.
You8217;ve come a long way since then. You8217;re the first Indian DJ to have your own radio show, Deep Fried Jalebee, on the renowned Frisky Radio.com. What8217;s the journey been like?
That8217;s correct. I do have my own radio show. My journey has been very exciting. We, at the Jalebee Cartel, have had 35 international releases so far and we8217;re also working on an album which will be released in India soon.
