Leeds, August 17: West Indies were 83 for five at lunch on the first day of the fourth Test at Headingley on Thursday.
Ramnaresh Sarwan was 22 not out and Ridley Jacobs five not out, the morning belonging to bowlers Darren Gough and Craig White who shared the wickets on their home ground.
England did not have long to wait for their first wicket after West Indies’ captain Jimmy Adams had won the toss and elected to bat.
In the third over of the morning Gough, bowling `up the hill’ from the Football Stand end made the breakthrough. To his previous delivery Sherwin Campbell had forced the ball through the offside for four.
However, trying for a repeat effort, Campbell, on eight, drove uppishly outside off-stump, with no foot movement and Marcus Trescothick took an easy catch in the gully.
Gough had struck with his 10th delivery and the tourists were 11 for one.
At the Kirkstall Lane End, Andrew Caddick settled into an accurate opening spell, repeatedly beating the outside edge and returning fine initial figures of 6-3-12-0.
New batsman Wavell Hinds got off the mark with a straight driven four off Gough and Adrian Griffith struck him for four through point.
After a wicketless hour England regained the initiative when West Indies, having reached fifty then lost three wickets for six runs.
White, coming round the wicket, from the football stand, induced an inside edge from Hinds on 16 and Alec Stewart took his 150th Test catch as a wicketkeeper.
Brian Lara started with a first ball four pulled off his hip. However, no more runs came from his bat.
Playing no stroke against White, umpire George Sharp gave Lara out lbw, the ball hitting the knee roll of the pad. Having chosen not to use his bat Lara could have few complaints.
Then 54 for three became 56 for four. Griffith on 22, who had been hit in the chest by Dominic Cork, played a half-hearted cut stroke against Gough, back on at the Kirkstall Lane end and Stewart took the routine catch.
West Indies badly needed Adams to show his customary resilience but on two he edged a White delivery on to his stumps, the crowd roaring its approval as the tourists lost their fifth wicket for 60.
At that stage the impressively sharp White had taken three wickets for six runs in 17 balls.
England were convinced they had Sarwan on eight caught one-handed by a leaping Stewart off Gough as he tried to pull but New Zealand umpire Doug Cowie rejected the appeal and TV replays suggested he was right.
Michael Vaughan almost claimed a wicket when his alert throw from short leg had the on-strike Jacobs worried.
