Indian automobile makers want you to junk your 15-year-old car so that they can sell more

The Proposal: Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers SIAM, the lobbying body of the industry, has asked government to scrap about 70 million old vehicles, including 15-year old cars and more than 10-year-old commercial vehicles.

The Carrot The SIAM has calculated the additional excise income to the Centre at Rs 4,500 crore. For state governments, the gain would be an additional sales tax close to Rs 2,500 crore. The gain for auto firms would be even more.

The Reason Siam says this would minimise health hazard in terms of pollution and safety.
