Wheeling-dealing in politics can take a different meaning, as Congress general secretaries may tell you. While the party has given block and district unit presidents in Gujarat spiffy Innovas for campaigning, the AICC general secretaries continue to travel by rickety Ambassadors. Margaret Alva had a tough time the other day as her Ambassador broke down during peak hour on the busy Delhi-Gurgaon stretch, causing chaos, with drivers of stranded vehicles honking and shouting blue murder. Fortunately for Alva, her son was following her in another car and she managed to make a quick exit from the scene. Digvijay Singh’s Ambassador has also been giving problems every now and then, besides having turned into a petrol guzzler. Treasurer Motilal Vora, who also uses an Ambassador, wouldn’t hear their pleas, though. Some general secretaries like B K Hari Prasad, Mukul Wasnik and V Narayansami have acquiesced—having decided it’s wiser just to drive around in their own personal cars.
