Yechury targets PM ‘silence’ on crucial issues

As the Monsoon Session of Parliament came to a close on Tuesday, the CPM took potshots at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

As the Monsoon Session of Parliament came to a close on Tuesday, the CPM took potshots at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for remaining “silent” on crucial issues concerning the common man and rather choosing to intervene during the debate on the civil nuclear liability Bill which it said reflected the priorities of the UPA government.

Taking a dig at the Prime Minister, senior CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said the “positive side” of the Monsoon Session was that the PM was present in the country as there were “no foreign trips or visits” but the “negative side” was his refusal to intervene or participate in any of the major discussions which concerned the common man to “give a direction to the government or the country”.

“He was present in the country during the entire session….We are very happy for that. But despite being available,he did not participate in any of the important discussions like the ones on price rise, situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the Bhopal gas tragedy despite our request. We hoped he would say something. His only intervention came on the nuclear liability Bill which clearly tells what are the priorities of this government,” Yechury said.

He said the “people’s issues” as a whole found a “lesser priority” in the Monsoon Session. “We wanted discussions on implementation of various initiatives under the Bharat Nirman programme, internal security and the increasing number of rail accidents. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The session was extended, but for passage of the liability Bill,” he added.
