Malta says yes to divorce: Report

VALLETTA: Local media said Malta has voted in favour of introducing divorce in a referendum on the tiny,staunchly Catholic Mediterranean island. The Times of Malta quoted Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi as saying Sunday that parliament would respect the will of the people and work on legislation to introduce divorce. Gonzi,who had been against divorce,has conceded,according to the report. Sundays final results of the polling on Saturday showed that 52.67 per cent of people voted in favour of divorce,the report said. Malta has long Catholic traditions and the churchs influence on the country is still quite significant.
