The Congress and the JMM wrested both the Rajya Sabha seats from the NDA in the bypolls held on Sunday, giving a fresh impetus to the UPAs claim of forming an alternative government in Jharkhand that is under the Presidents Rule for six months now.

Congresss Dheeraj Sahu, who expectedly got the votes of 43 UPA MLAs,bagged an extra vote from JDUs MLA Radha Krishna Kishore. JMMs Hemant Soren sailed through by securing 38 votes in the 82-member House whose current effective strength is 73.

The NDA had fielded Ajay Maroo against Soren and Anup Agarwal against Sahu from the two seats in the Upper House that fell vacant after BJPs Yashwant Sinha and JDUs Digvijay Singh were elected to the Lok Sabha.

Three votes of RJD MLAs Chunna Singh and Ramchandra Singh, and JDU MLA Khiru Mahato who had cast their votes in favour of Dheeraj were declared invalid.

The four-member JDU suffered a split with two of its MLAs,Radha Krishna Kishore and Kameshwar Nath Das,voting in favour of Sahu and Soren. We voted in favour of the UPA candidates as per our conscience, Kishore told The Indian Express.

The NDA disintegrated with BJPs 24 and JDUs two MLA voting in favour of Agrawal. Maroo bagged 30 votes.

BJP president Raghuvar Das conceded the defeat. We never had the magic figure of 37,but it is shocking that our own allies ditched us, said Das.
