The Supreme Court Monday took note of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister visiting the riots affected areas in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh and observed that the court may not need to get involved in such issues if all authorities performed their duties well.
Yes,we know the Chief Minister visited the area yesterday and the Prime Minister is going there today. If all authorities do their duty well,we dont need to interfere, said a Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and Ranjana P Desai.
Appearing for the UP government, senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan assured the Bench that all efforts were being made to provide relief to the affected families, who were being provided with shelter, food and medicines.
In its affidavit, the state told the court that close to 42,000 people had fled the riots affected Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts and they were being provided shelter in relief camps.
The Centre,in its affidavit, informed the court that 78 companies of Centre Armed Police Forces (CAPF) had been deployed in the disturbed areas. Giving details of the ground situation, the Centre in its response, said as per the state governments reply,44 people were killed and 97 injured in the violence-hit areas and 2,462 people have so far been arrested.
The affidavits were filed by the state and central governments in response to two PILs,seeking various directives by the court to ensure well-being of the residents of the area, besides a judicial inquiry and adequate compensation.
The court had on the last date directed the state government to take immediate steps in association with the Centre to bring under control the communal violence in Muzaffarnagar and ensure safe passage to people stranded in the conflict zone. It further asked authorities to ensure that those injured are provided immediate medical assistance.
It had rejected the UP governments persistent plea to keep the Centre out at the moment since it may be construed as a prelude to Presidents rule and fissures between them.
