Unmarried couple detained for selling baby,let off

The police detained,and later let off,an unmarried couple for allegedly trying to sell their 3-month-old daughter in Mancherial town of Andhra Pradeshs Adilabad district on Friday.

The couple,Athram Akbar and Athram Maheshwari,who belong to a Gond tribal family and are also cousins,were driven out of their native Venkatapur village four years ago,Mancherial DSP Y Vijay said. Though not married,they were living in Mancherial and Maheshwari had delivered the baby about three months ago. They are very poor and unable to take care of the baby so they decided to give her to a childless couple.

After questioning the couple,the police sent them to Women and Child Welfare officials for counselling and later let them off.
