Armed with lathis and brooms,a group of people,believed to be Trinamool Congress workers,on Tuesday stormed the coastal police station in South 24 Parganas district and forcibly took away a criminal after assaulting two policemen.
Soumen Patra,hailing from Puinjali village close to Sundarbans,was arrested on Monday night on charges including murder,theft,snatching and eve-teasing,the police said.
A group of about 150 Trinamool Congress workers,including women,allegedly stormed the police station at about 7.30 this morning. They assaulted officer-in-charge OC Kaushik Kundu and Assistant Sub-Inspector Shyamal Mandal before breaking the lock-up and freeing Patra. The ASI was hit on his face while the OC on his head.
Patra was earlier attached to the CPM,but he switched side as the Trinamool Congress gained strength in his area of operation,sources said.
The district police had been informed of the incident,they added.
