With the crucial budget session just a few days away, the Trinamool Congress is set to mount pressure on the UPA to earn sops for Bengal. The party had a meeting on Friday that was attended by all the 24 TMC MPs.
Significantly, all these months, the fiscal crisis of Bengal and its plea for funds to the Centre has been in the realm of persuasion. But now, there seems to be a shift in strategy with TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee having decided to take on the Centre on the floor Parliament by raising the issue of financial bankruptcy. The party is trying to show examples of Kerala and Punjab as well to rope in support on federalism.
Following a meeting between the Chief Minister and all TMC MPs,partys chief whip in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay said that they would raise the issue of Bengals bankrupt economy during the budget session which is scheduled to begin on March 12.
We will highlight how it has impeded West Bengals development initiatives, he said.
Though he said the issue of a mid-term poll a demand raised by Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi a few days ago was not discussed,a close door discussion between Mamata and Trivedi before the meeting fuelled speculation that the CM has cautioned Trivedi against making such comments.
Asked about the possibility of a fourth front led by Trinamool,Bandyopadhyay said the party has not thought of it as of now but other parties may be thinking on the agenda.
We have not discussed it so far, he said.
With speculation doing rounds about a hike in petrol and diesel prices,Bandyopadhyay said the party was opposed to any move that would impose additional burden on the people.
