Traffic rules: Drivers learn dos and donts from cops

As many as 20 autorickshaw drivers have already received lessons on traffic rules in a training programme that began last Saturday. For the day-long workshops that are being held every Saturday, the Traffic police have roped in driving schools to provide training to drivers. The drivers are being imparted knowledge on traffic rules, even as their driving skills are being tested. The police claim that most cab drivers plying on local routes, including Morni,Pinjore,Kalka and nearby villages, are unaware of traffic rules.

The awareness level of these drivers regarding traffic rules is not much. While they do know their right from left, they still need to be taught concepts like speed limit. That is why,we decided to start with the programme, said Inspector Pawan Kumar of the Traffic wing.

Till now, about 20 drivers have been trained and the police aim to train another 200 under the scheme. There are more than 200 autos and cabs plying on the circuit Panchkula-Pinjore-Morni circuit each day. This is the first time the district police have come up with such an initiative.

To check overloading of autos and cabs and also to prevent overspeeding, the police are setting up surprise checkposts in and around Panchkula, said Kumar.
