Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who gave us the superlative Lives Of Others, which won the 2007 Oscar for best foreign film, remakes the French film Anthony Zimmer.
The film begins in a Paris cafe, when Elise is being tailed by the police. Of course she eludes them, and takes an overnight train to Venice. Frank,an American tourist, meets the mysterious Elise; he gets caught between Interpol and a British gangster, who are all after Alexander Pierce,a crafty financial criminal. Elise somehow cons the police into thinking Frank is the sought-after Pierce, while Frank goes along with whatever Elise demands.
Alexander Pierce is the mystery man who has stolen millions from a gangster and gone into hiding. Scotland Yard and the gangster who Pierce has conned studiously follow Elise and Frank. The film is a sequence of chases over the rooftops of Venice, across waterways, etc.
Danger, intrigue, suspense, romance are all characteristics youd expect of such a film starring two of Hollywoods hottest properties, but there is no excitement in The Tourist. The films paper-thin plot isnt salvaged by a stellar cast led by two of Hollywoods major stars; The Tourists biggest disappointment is that it comes from the director who gave us the outstanding The Lives Of Others.
The lead pair Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie has absolutely no chemistry. Both seem asleep through the movie, which moves at a tardy pace. The Tourist offers us nothing in the way of entertainment. The presence of Paul Bettany,Timothy Dalton,Steven Berkoff and Rufus Sewell does absolutely nothing to this otherwise lifeless thriller.
The Tourist is like champagne without the fizz and sparkle.
RATING:
One for direction and script. One for performances and locations.
