Telangana: Trains off track for 2nd day

Train services remained disrupted in Andhra Pradesh,the second day of the ‘rail roko’ agitation,called to press for Telangana statehood.

Train services remained disrupted in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday,the second day of the ‘rail roko’ agitation,called to press for Telangana statehood. South Central Railway ran many trains but they were mostly empty except for some security personnel.

Large groups of protesters gathered at several places to block railway tracks,but almost all of them were arrested by the police. The police also thwarted attempts by ABVP to attack bungalows at Ministers Quarters and arrested 10 of them. Protesters hurled eggs at the car of state minister Danam Nagender when he arrived to inaugurate a private hospital in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile,in a major relief to people in Telangana,state transport unions called off their strike and decided to run buses from Sunday. The unions claimed that the Telangana Joint Action Committee had exempted them from strike because people were facing hardships. AP Road Transport Corporation MD B Prasada Rao said some 90 per cent of buses were back on roads Sunday.

For the past 29 days,some 9,000 buses had remained off the roads in Telangana. Officials said that over 60,000 road transport employees would return to work from Monday.

After the government threatened to de-recognise schools that remained closed during the strike,nearly all schools and educational institutions are likely to reopen Monday. Also,officials at Singareni Collieries began talks with labour unions to urge them to call off their strike.

Meanwhile,TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao’s son K T Rama Rao,TRS MP K Vijayashanti,Congress MP G Vivek,who were arrested on Saturday were released on bail on Sunday. Congress MP Ponnam Prabhakar,who is in judicial custody has refused to apply for bail.
