Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said the Telangana model cannot be applied in West Bengal where Gorkhas are demanding a separate Gorkhaland.
As the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha GJM volunteers fast-unto-death entered the second day on Saturday,Mukherjee said: Telangana model is not applicable everywhere. Telangana movement is going on for the past 60 years and it does not mean that everywhere a separate state will be created. The Finance Minister was addressing mediapersons during an inauguration function of a hospital at Barasat in North 24-Parganas.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee once again made it clear that she will not support the demand for a separate state for Darjeeling Gorkhas. We do not want any division of Bengal, said Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on Saturday.
The GJM,meanwhile, announced that the 96-hour-bandh,starting December 14,will not be withdrawn. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had urged the Gorkha leadership that they should desist from bandhs when a tri-partite talk is slated in Darjeeling on December 21.
