Suzuki Motorcycles unit at Rohtak OK’d

Haryana government approved a Rs 2,000 cr unit of Suzuki that will come up at Rohtak.

The Haryana government today approved a Rs 2,000 crore unit of Suzuki Motorcycles that will come up at Rohtak.

The first phase of the project will entail an investment of Rs 500 crore and will be completed in 2014 with an annual capacity of 5-lakh units,officials said here.

The total cost of the 3-phase project is estimated to be Rs 2,000 crore,with a capacity of 2 million units by 2019,they said.

Besides Japan’s Suzuki Motorcycle,which has a unit in Gurgaon,Hero Motocorp,Honda and Harley Davidson already have plants in the state making it the country’s mobike hub.

Haryana approved Suzuki’s proposal at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. It was also attended by state Industries Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala and Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki S Nakanishi and other officials.

Nakanishi told Hooda that the plant will commence production in 2014,HSIDC Managing Director Rajeev Arora said.

He added that the 50-acre unit will provide employment to 4,000 people and generate indirect employment opportunities for thousands more in the nearby region in terms of vendor manpower,logistics providers and service industries.

Arora said carmaker Maruti Suzuki has made investments of Rs 12,000 crore during the last seven years and investment of another Rs 6,000 crore was is in pipeline.

Haryana is the only state where Maruti Suzuki Group has made sizable investments. Its existing units for four-wheeler manufacturing are located at Gurgaon and Manesar. The company has made investments of nearly Rs 22,000 crore at Gurgoan and Manesar facilities.

Maruti Suzuki is setting up R&D facilities with a test course at IMT Rohtak over an area of 600 acres.

Officials claimed that the group is setting up two-wheeler manufacturing unit at IMT Rohtak now,and the proposed venture is an indicator of its preference for Haryana and dispels notions of it slowing investments in the state.

Y S Malik,Financial Commissioner & Principal Secretary Industries,Government of Haryana informed that due to the impressive infrastructure facilities at IMT Rohtak,some of prestigious industrial houses and institutions like Asian Paints,Maruti Suzuki,Footwear Design & Development Institute,Hi-Tech Plast,Saberkantha Dairies have chosen IMT Rohtak for setting up their ventures.

Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Ltd,a subsidiary of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation,already has manufacturing facilities for two-wheelers at Kherki Dhaula in Gurgaon.
