Rajan Madhavs directorial debut Muran has aroused a lot of curiosity, thanks to its sleek trailer and the new avatars of lead actors Cheran and Prasanna. The young filmmaker talks about the highly-anticipated Tamil movie and his future plans.
What is the theme of Muran and what does it mean?
Muran means contradiction. The main theme of this movie concerns two guys who contradict each other on everything they say and do. The film is basically a psychological thriller but it has all the elements of an entertainer.
According to you, what is the highlight of the movie?
It would be wrong to say that Muran is an unusually different movie that will take the Tamil film industry to another level. Its a simple story but I tried a peculiar story-telling pattern and did some homework on the visual aspects of the movie to give it a distinct look. Also,Cheran and Prasanna will be seen in different roles, something that they have never attempted before.
Dont you think casting Cheran in an action-backed role was a huge risk,as earlier he has only portrayed soft characters?
The character of Nanda demanded someone like Cheran. Moreover,Muran is not an action thriller, its a psychological thriller which needed a protagonist who is not physically strong but overcomes his problems with his intelligence.
Your father, late music director Raveendran, was a popular personality of Malayalam cinema. Do you have any plans to make a movie in Malayalam?
Definitely,I have a clear picture about what to do next. But it all depends on the result of my debut film. If I succeed as a director in Tamil,I will only be happy to do Malayalam movies.
How would you rate your brother,as a music director?
Saajan Madhav,my twin brother, has composed the music for Muran. He has already done Vinayan Sirs Yakshiyum Njaanum. I was extremely comfortable working with him as both of us have had similar taste in music and movies right from childhood.
Muran,a thriller
Rajan Madhav is the son of the late music director Raveendran, who has composed the music for several Malayalam hit movies. Though he grew up in a film background,he never had any plans to get into movies. But fate had its own plans for him and Rajan started working as an assistant director with renowned Malayalam filmmaker Shaji Kailas. He also worked with other directors including Padmakumar. He worked as a co-director in Mysskins Tamil film Anjathey.
Later he decided to turn an independent filmmaker. But it wasnt an easy task for him. It took him three years to find a producer and convince the actors to be a part of his ambitious project Muran.
Muran is a thriller and revolves around Nanda,a musician who composes jingles. He is on his way back to Chennai from Bangalore. He meets Arjun,a rich spoilt brat on the road. Due to some reasons,Nanda ends up hitchhiking with Arjun. During the journey they realise that both of them have contrary views about life. While Nanda has a practical approach towards life,Arjun believes that its a boon and we should live life to the fullest. What starts off as a simple argument eventually turns into a complicated issue and creates a conflict between the duo. How they resolve the differences between them forms the crux of the story…..
