Four female students and a male teacher of a private college in Bhopal were arrested on Thursday after an 18-year-old Pharmacy student committed suicide alleging ragging. She said in her note that the accused,among other things,attempted to force her into a relationship with another student.
Anita Sharma,a student of PKDF College on Hoshangabad road,hanged herself in her room in Jeevan Vihar Society after leaving a suicide note describing the trauma she suffered in her first year. Five accused named in the note were charged with abetment to suicide and have been remanded to 14-day judicial custody. Four seniors and a male teacher forced me to engage in indecent acts, her suicide note read.
Anita,said that when she complained to college authorities,they asked her to bear with it as it was a normal practice. I can become neither indecent nor strong, she wrote. Her note also said that after she complained to the college principal,one of the accused threatened to throw acid on her.
Home Minister Umashankar Gupta ordered the immediat arrest of the accused. The states Human Rights Commission has sought reports concerning steps taken to curb ragging in the state as well as the police report.
