The second phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh witnessed a low turnout,as only 43 per cent of the total 2.48 crore voters exercised their franchise on Thursday. In the 2004 elections,the turnout was 45.7 per cent.
Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from a few places in the 17 constituencies that went to the polls.
The highest turnout of 52 per cent was recorded in Ambedkar Nagar and the lowest of 38.4 in Kaushambi. Pratapgarh saw 39.1 per cent,Allahabad 43 per cent,Jaunpur 41.5 per cent and Faizabad 47 per cent polling. Vinay Katiyar of the BJP is in the fray for the Ambedkar Nagar Lok Sabha seat.
Amethi,the constituency of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi,witnessed 40 per cent turnout. In 2004,Amethi had recorded 44.43 per cent turnout.
In the first phase of polling in 16 constituencies,over 46 per cent voters had exercised their franchise.
State Chief Electoral Officer Anuj Kumar Bishnoi said polling was peaceful.
At 13 booths,EVMs had to be replaced due to technical fault.
In Pratapgarh,the district authorities had asked Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya and Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari to stay indoor till the end of polling.
Bishnoi said some incidents of clashes were reported. Two people were injured in a clash between rival groups in Lakhanpur village under the Allahabad Lok Sabha constituency.
Another clash was reported between BJP and BSP supporters at Narendrapur polling booth in the Gonda constituency. BJP candidate Ram Pratap Singh received minor injuries and his vehicle was damaged. FIRs were registered against both parties.
