Venture capital firm,Song Investment Advisors,that invests in companies working predominantly in the SME space,is bullish on the affordable education and health-care sectors in India and plans to invest around USD 10 million in 2-3 such start-ups next year,a top company official said.

The Mauritius-based VC firm has so far invested in two companies–Eye Q Hospitals and K 12 Techno Services–which are trying to bridge the gap between high-end service providers and the very poor ones.

The investments made in multiple tranches are usually small-ticket fundings ranging from USD one to three million,the official said.

“Our focus is to invest in high-growth areas crucial for socio-economic development of the country. We have so far invested in two companies and will be investing another USD 10 million in two to three companies next year,” Song Advisors’ Founder and Managing Director,Vishal Vashisth,said on the sidelines of a SME-CXO event organised by Morocco-based Nasseba.com.

He,however,did not divulge the names of the companies it plans to invest in,but said that it would be in sectors such as agriculture,financial services,clean-tech or waste management.

The firm along with Sequoia Capital had,last month,invested around USD 15 million in K12 Techno Services,that manages over 60 schools run by 15 different Trusts under the Gowtham Model School and Orchids – the International school brand.

Song Investment Advisors,backed by Soros economic development fund,Omidiyar Network and Google,not only funds companies such as K12 Techno Services but also helps them with its expertise and domain knowledge to develop curriculum,infrastructure,pre-school management and providing marketing solutions.

“Our aim is to create a successful model to demonstrate that investing in SMEs not only can achieve shareholder returns — hence catalysing greater investment in the sector — but can also generate stakeholder returns,such as increasing economic opportunities and jobs for the masses in India,” Vashisth said.
