Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday scored an emphatic victory in the first-ever Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association elections. MPCAs office-bearers have been decided by consensus since 1981 when Madhavrao Scindia became president for the first time, and the practice continued when his son Jyotiraditya took over as president in 2004.
When the votes were counted around 1 am on Monday, the mandate was decisively in favour of Scindia, who got 142 votes to his challenger Madhya Pradesh Commerce Minister Kailash Vijayvargiyas tally of 72. Scindias entire panel trounced his BJP rivals panel with equal ease.
Vijayvargiya said that he was happy he made a maharaja campaign hard and seek votes by calling on the voters while Scindia said he got the positive vote for his development agenda.
Right till the start of the general meeting chaired by Scindia, the current president,Sunday there were rumours of a last-minute compromise. The atmosphere in Indore was tense with the police resorting to cane charge late in the night. Supporters of both camps crowded around the Usha Raje Stadium since morning and Vijayvargiya, who is president of Indore Cricket Association, decided to take on Scindia saying elections were needed for over all development of cricket. In the run up to Sunday, the MP Minister, who hails from Indore, had accused Scindia of favouring Gwalior over Indore.
Vijayvargiya had staked his career in the last Assembly election by vacating his safe seat for his confidant Ramesh Mendola when the party refused to give the latter a ticket. Vijayvargiya and Mendola, both tainted by corruption charges, had won from their respective seats. BJP veteran Sumitra Mahajan, who represents Indore in the Lok Sabha, had accused Vijayvargiya of sabotage in the last general elections but could not get the party to act against him.
