The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a petition challenging the appointment of Navin Chawla as the next Chief Election Commissioner CEC.
The petition, filed by the United Communist Party of India UCPI,which claimed to be registered political party, sought a direction from the court for implementation of recommendations made by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami for Chawlas removal from the poll panel.
The petitioners lawyer,Sugriva Dubey, said Gopalaswamis allegations in his recommendations to the President must be examined and verified by the apex court. Otherwise,it would erode the impartiality of the Election Commissioners,Dubey said.
Hearing the brief submission, the Bench presided by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan refused to issue any urgent directions and said the matter would be taken up for hearing on March 20. The petition also said the selection process of the CEC need to be reformed and a panel, like the one that appoints judges, should be formed as suggested by the Administrative Reform Commission headed by Congress leader Veerapa Moily.
