SC 038; ST reserved seats Bill sent to Standing Committee

The Opposition forced the government to refer a Bill granting special powers to the Election Commission on delimitation of SC/ST constituencies to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

The Opposition Thursday forced the government to refer a Bill granting special powers to the Election Commission on delimitation of SC/ST constituencies to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Bill,2013,needed to be passed urgently as it was to replace an ordinance that expires next month.

Soon after Law Minister Ashwani Kumar rose to seek approval of the Rajya Sabha for the Bill, members from BJP,BSP,SP and CPM objected to rushing through the crucial law. They insisted that it should be referred to the Standing Committee because it concerns all parties as it is related to delimitation. Kumar finally conceded the demand after Naresh Agarwal of the SP demanded voting on the issue.
