The Supreme Court has quelled yet another attempt to question Union minister Kishore Chandra Deos claim to tribal status, and dismissed a review petition filed against its own order.
The SC refused to entertain the review petition that sought to challenge its March 4 order dismissing an appeal against an order of the Andhra Pradesh High Court upholding Scheduled Tribe status of Deo. The review petition was filed within weeks of Deo being sworn-in as a Cabinet minister in July.
Apart from the fact that the petition was filed way beyond the stipulated time of one month after the March order, the SC also did not find any merit in the case.
Deo,who represents Araku seat of Andhra Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, was frontrunner for the post of Speaker after the last elections, but lost out to Meira Kumar, apparently because of questions over his tribal status. Incidentally, this question has been settled through at least three different inquiries in the past, all of which ruled in his favour.
