Rape victim in lockup: SC seeks report from UP govt

The Supreme Court Monday sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the detention of a 10-year-old rape victim in Bulandshahr

The Supreme Court Monday sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the detention of a 10-year-old rape victim in Bulandshahr.

A minor Dalit cannot be put in lock up, the court said. The court,meanwhile,received a report on the incident from the National Legal Services Authority and directed the UP government to examine it before filing its report.

The court had taken suo motu cognisance of The Indian Express report on the detention of the girl. On April 9,the girls mother had taken her to a police station in Bulandshahr and complained that Harinder,35,an upper-caste Rajput,had raped her daughter and dumped her in a field,unconscious. But instead of registering a case against the accused,the police threw the girl behind bars. Her mother tried to reason with the police women but she was told to leave the police station.
