Dec 22: Supreme Court to hold special vacation sitting for urgent matters

The Supreme Court, which is on winter recess, will have a special sitting on December 22. CJI Surya Kant will sit with Justice Joymalya Bagchi to hear urgent matters.

The CJI arranged the ‘Special Vacation Bench’ sitting to ensure timely consideration of pressing cases that require immediate judicial intervention even during vacation, sources said. The SC had earlier barred lawyers from mentioning cases for urgent hearing and put in place a system whereby such cases would  get listed automatically.

However, the mentioning continued with lawyers citing urgency, and last week, the CJI said he will try and sit on December 22 to take up the urgent matters. The SC will reopen after winter recess on January 5, 2026.
